The collection was created in the Ukrainian diaspora by the Smoloskyp Publishing House. Deeply involved in political and cultural opposition in Soviet and post-Soviet Ukraine, Smoloskyp built a communication channel between Ukraine and the international community, making the Ukrainian oppositional movement internationally known. In 1998, the collection was institutionalized as the Museum-Archive and Documentation Centre of Ukrainian Samvydav in Kyiv. It holds the most extensive collection of Ukrainian samizdat; Ukrainian diaspora periodicals; the collection of Ukrainian tamizdat (samizdat materials published abroad in Ukrainian, Russian, English, French, German and other languages); hundreds of photos of Soviet-era political prisoners and dissidents; the archives of several committees for human rights in Ukraine from the US, Canada, Australia, Argentina, and other countries.

The collection was created by the Ukrainian émigré publishing house and human rights organization, Smoloskyp, and personally by its director Osyp Zinkevich. Smoloskyp Publishers was originally founded in Baltimore, US, in 1967 by a Ukrainian émigré activist and a member of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), Osyp Zinkevich. The main scope of Smoloskyp's activities was the publishing and dissemination of Ukrainian dissident literature and documents. Smoloskyp organized a series of international campaigns against political repression in Soviet Ukraine and (co)founded several human rights organizations in support of freedom in Ukraine. Smoloskyp ran information services in the US, Canada, and Argentina, widely disseminating factual information on political repression and the dissident movement in Ukraine. It cooperated with Amnesty International and sent humanitarian aid to Ukrainian political prisoners. Material related to these activities constitute the collection. Smoloskyp volunteers smuggled Ukrainian samizdat materials and other illegal literature and documents abroad, and they translated and published them in the US and Canada. Its secret communication channels along with its own network of specially trained couriers allowed Smoloskyp to establish a two-way traffic of censored information and clandestine materials across the Iron curtain. Unlike some other emigre organizations that ran smuggling operations, information about the Smoloskyp couriers is declassified.

In 1992, Smoloskyp Publishing House, along with its collection, moved to Kyiv, Ukraine. In 1998, the collection was institutionalized as the Museum-Archive and Documentation Centre of Ukrainian Samvydav in Kyiv. It is opened for researchers, journalists, and students. Smoloskyp promotes its collection by organizing exhibitions targeted to students and schoolchildren. The collection’s primary focus includes Ukrainian Shestidesiatniki writers, literary critics, and political journalists; the human rights movement in Ukraine (particularly the Ukrainian Helsinki Group); and the material pertaining the late-Soviet Rukh Oporu, the Ukrainian democratic and human rights movement of the 1960s - 1990s. In its émigré period, Smoloskyp published more than a hundred works of Ukrainian samizdat, the memoirs of former political prisoners, five volumes of the works of M. Khvylyovy, the works of L. Kostenko, O. Berdnyk, M. Rudenko, M. Osadchy, I. Kalynets, M. Kholodny, V. Stus, and others. Smoloskyp reprinted the samizdat periodical Ukrainsky visnyk (The Ukrainian Herald), and published the collections of documents and material of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group.

In its Ukrainian period, Smoloskyp published the memoirs and writings of Petro Grigorenko and the writings of Vyacheslav Chornovil in ten volumes. Among the most significant publications, based on the collection, is a handbook, Rukh Oporu v Ukraini. 1960-1990 [Resistance Movement in Ukraine, 1960-1990. An Encyclopedia]. It contains extensive information on the Ukrainian political and cultural opposition movement in the 1960s – 1990s; biographical material of Ukrainian dissidents and political prisoners, information on Ukrainian human rights organizations, Ukrainian samizdat, diaspora periodicals and publications, and on émigré activists and couriers who smuggled samizdat material to the West.

The Museum-Archive and Documentation Centre of Ukrainian Samvydav in Kyiv holds a collection of Ukrainian samizdat (including samizdat periodicals and informal chronicles); Ukrainian diaspora periodicals; the collection of Ukrainian tamizdat (samizdat materials published abroad in Ukrainian, Russian, English, French, German and other languages); hundreds of photos of Soviet-era political prisoners and dissidents; the archives of several committees for human rights in Ukraine from US, Canada, Australia, Argentina, and other countries. The collection also holds Smoloskyp correspondence with international human rights organizations, including the Amnesty International. Smoloskyp’s financial documentation is available for readers, as well.
