Upon the initiative of Nadiya Svitlychna and Mykola Plakhotniuk in the years immediately following independence in 1991, an NGO was created called the “Sixtiers Museum” with the express intent of gathering materials that would eventually be displayed in a museum-archive, Members of the NGO, many of whom were themselves sixtiers, began collecting materials about prominent members of the movement. Svitlychna promised to send her sizeable archive to the museum, while Plakhotniuk began collecting materials in Kyiv and the rest of Ukraine. Plakhotniuk headed the organization, and after its founding in 2012 the museum, until his death in 2015. Other sixtiers were drawn into the project at various stages, like Halyna Vozna-Kushnir, who headed the NGO for a little while before turning over the reins to Plakhotniuk. She donated samvydav material, along with many sixtiers, as they all possessed copies of the texts circulating in Ukraine at the time. There is a lot of overlap in the materials, but the museum has kept a lot of duplicates, as they were typed on different machines, each manipulated slightly so the KGB knew exactly who was typing what materials.
