Artists' books, became worldwide starting the end of the 1960s a medium of communication between graphic artists, writers, photographers and artists working with new media. Soon this medium was discovered by a young generation of artists in the GDR, who distancing themselves from socialist realism, used it as a vehicle for sharing not only their artistic views as well as dissenting ideas, which eventually draw the attention of the Stasi. This collection of GDR artists’ books has its origin during the GDR times when artists approached the Saxon Library, then active in purchasing graphic art from throughout the GDR.

Barbara Fatyga Archive

Private archive of prof. Barbara Fatyga gathers thousands of materials regarding Polish youth culture in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The archive is an effect of various research projects led by Fatyga and her co-workers – initially at the Institute for Youth Problems Research and later in the Youth Research Centre in the Institute of Applied Sciences at the Warsaw University. The archive contains youth fanzines and cassettes as well as recordings and transcripts of biographical interviews.

Black Hole Underground Club. Nagy, Gyula Private Collection

Fekete Lyuk means black hole in Hungarian. It reminds most Hungarians of a legendary club, which emerged quite suddenly in a traditional working-class district. It had a cult following among young intellectuals, punks, and skinheads, but it also quickly became a symbol of nonconformity and rebellion. However, hardly anybody remembers Gyula Nagy, the man who as an agitprop educator founded the Fekete Lyuk club.

Braşov - Oraşul Memorabil Collection

The Brașov–Orașul Memorabil Collection gathers more than 4,500 scanned copies of personal and official photos illustrating the history of this Transylvanian city, everyday life in Romania under communism, the programme of so-called urban systematisation conducted during Ceaușescu’s regime, and the popular resistance to this arbitrary policy.
